Mary, our Mother, with the Child Jesus is symbolical of the special honour she
has both in the Order of Servants of Mary (Founders of the Vicariate) and the
Congregation of the Missionaries of Mariannhill. The flanked angels represent
the spirituality of Mary permeating from both Religious Orders, which is the
the spirituality of the whole Vicariate.
Bottom left: wildlife: this is something peculiar to the Vicariate.

where the bishop comes from.

BISHOP SIEGFRIED JWARA CMM

Bishop Siegfried Mandla Jwara’s Biography:
Born at Breamar in Umzinto on 01 February 1957. He joined the Missionaries
of Mariannhill as a Postulant in 1979 and novitiate in 1981. He made his first
profession in 1982 and final profession on 02 February 1986. He was
ordained a deacon by the late Bishop Mansuet Biyase on 31 May 1986 at
Cedara. On 14 February 1987 he was ordained a Priest by the late Bishop Paul Themba Mngoma at Himmelberg Mission.

In 1989-1990 he did studies in human development, Formation and leadership at St. Anselm in England. From 1991 to 1993 he was novice master in Mariannhill Monastery. From 1994 to 1998 he was Rector at Abbort Francis Student House at Merrivale. Then in 1997 to 1998 he was a lecturer at St Joseph’s Theological Institute. In 1999 to 2002 he was Provincial Superior in Mariannhill. 2002 to 2004, he was General Councillor in Rome. In 2004 to 2005 he did a course in Counselling and Leadership in England. From 2006 to 2009 he was Provincial Superior in Mthatha. 2014 to 2016 he was Regional Superior in Mthatha. His episcopal ordination was on 25 June 2016 at Riverview, Mtubatuba.

  1. Rt Rev Mgr Edwin M Kinch, OSM was appointed Prefect Apostolic 13 November 1962, resigned May 1970.
  2. Rt Rev Mgr A Dennehy was appointed Apostolic Administrator by Pope Paul VI in May 1970 and resigned 1975.
  3. Rt Rev Bishop Michael M O’Shea, OSM was Appointed Prefect Apostolic 9 January 1976 and Bishop 19 November 1990. Bishop O’Shea was ordained 6 April 1991, died 30th May 2006.
  4. Rt Rev Bishop José Luís Gerardo Ponce de León IMC, Appointed Bishop 24th November 2008, ordained 18th April 2009. Appointed Bishop of Manzini and Apostolic Administrator of Ingwavuma Vicariate 29 November 2013. Took possession of the Diocese of Manzini 26 January 2014.

The Prefecture was erected by the Bull “Quoniam Praecipuas” dated 12 November 1962 and entrusted to the United States of America Eastern Province of the Order of Servants of Mary. The Prefecture was raised to the status Vicariate Apostolic by the Bull “Alacri Profecto” dated 19 November 1990. The boundries of the territory are: Mozambique and Swaziland to the North; the Indian Ocean on the East; the Diocese of Eshowe to the West and South. The Vicariate is comprised of three magisterial districts: Ingwavuma, Ubombo and Hlabisa
